Dental Implants Q&A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are a superior choice when it comes to replacing missing teeth. They consist of small titanium posts implanted into the jaw bone. These posts fuse to your jaw bone and serve as a base for a sturdy, porcelain crown or implant-supported dentures.

Dental implants may replace a single missing tooth up to a full arch of missing teeth. Implants require less maintenance than dentures; you care for them just like your natural teeth.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants offer numerous benefits, including:

  • Permanence
  • Confidence in your smile
  • Natural appearance
  • Preservation of facial structure and volume
  • Comfortable fit
  • Better oral health

Dental implants help you maintain speech and chewing patterns and are durable and functional. They aren’t going to slip out of position as dentures do.

Can anyone get dental implants?

If you have missing teeth, set up a consultation with Dr. Hardy to find out if you are a candidate for dental implants. Dental implant placement does require you to be free of gum disease and to have enough bone in your jaw and/or upper palate to support them.

A bone graft is the first step in getting implants for patients without enough bone. This outpatient procedure encourages the production of new, healthy bone tissue to support your future implant.

What does getting dental implants involve?

If Dr. Hardy and you determine that dental implants are the right step in your oral treatment plan, you can expect a multi-visit process. At your first visit, Dr. Hardy surgically implants the metal post into your jawbone. Usually, this requires just a local anesthetic.

If you are getting a full-arch replacement or have multiple teeth getting implants, the doctor places more than one post.

For the next few weeks, the post fuses to your jawbone to create a sturdy foundation for restorations. Once fused, Dr. Hardy attaches an abutment to the post, which will hold a dental crown or implant-supported dentures.

Dr. Hardy checks the fit and bite of your new smile so you can go out into the world with confidence and ease.
